What is Self Compassion and why is it so important?
Compassion is an attitude that involves a certain set of feelings, thoughts, desires, urges, motives and behaviours that can be directed towards any living thing, (i.e. Another person, animals, plants, a group of people, society, the environment, etc and ourselves).
It can be described as a basic kindness for people who are suffering, a desire to help, to releave the suffering.
Self-compassion put simply is a way of looking after ourselves and showing ourselves the same compassion that we would show our loved ones, our beloved pets, our children, even when we look after objects (Like a car) we often treat them better than we do ourselves..
Why is that?
Sometimes its easier to treat others, animals or objects with kindness and compassion. We can feel selfish or worried we may be seen as self-centred if we dare to out ourselves first. So we think that being hard on ourselves creates motivation to change the way we are and keep going. In actual fact the opposite occurs, we end up feeling demotivated, our self-esteem plummets and all the research shows that are mental health actually declines as a result of being hard on ourselves.
In short learning self-compassion can bring many rewards, we can improve our mental health, have a greater sense of wellbeing, reduce anxiety and depression and feel more content within ourselves.
I am very proud to present that myself and my another amazing therapist are running a workshop on exactly how to learn the art of self-compassion..
